چکیده

The time evolution of the interface between the cholesteric and the blue phase of the cholesteryl esters has been measured as a function-Cif supercooling. The results are interpreted as consistent with the physical picture of a shape-preserving interface profile propagating with a rate that is determined by the orientational relaxation of the molecules near the interface. This method of investigation provides a complementary tool to the more often pursued equilibrium and dynamic investigations for the further understanding of phase transformations in liquid crystals.

Induction of chirality in nematic phases

2014 Some electrooptic and thermooptic effects of cholesteric phase are used in liquid crystal visualisation and display systems provided spiral pitch is equal to a visible wavelength or several micrometers. Liquid crystals with cholesteric properties were generally cholesteric esters. Unfortunately these materials are chemically nonstable. More stable nematic liquid crystals twisted by mixing ...

Correlation length and chirality of the fluctuations in the isotropic phase of nematic and cholesteric liquid crystals.

Light-scattering measurements of the correlation length in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal reveal a temperature dependence following Landau-de Gennes theory for the isotropic phase with a bare correlation length smaller than has been measured in other liquid crystals. Similar measurements in a cholesteric liquid crystal demonstrate that the correlation length in the isotropic ph...

Twisted Line Liquids

We propose a model of directed lines where the average direction has the nature of a cholesteric liquid crystal. This model, for instance, would describe the liquid of screw dislocations in the twist-grain-boundary (TGB) phase of liquid crystals. We show that the presence of lines does not alter the long wavelength elasticity of a cholesteric and, therefore, does not stabilize Landau-Peierls in...

Theory of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals.

A mean field theory is presented to describe cholesteric phases in mixtures of a polymer and a cholesteric liquid crystal. Taking into account an anisotropic coupling between a polymer and a liquid crystal, we examine the helical pitch, twist elastic constant, and phase separations. Analytical expressions of the helical pitch of a cholesteric phase and the twist elastic constant are derived as ...
